Dermalogica: Delve Deep into the Brand’s Impactful Solution

Dermalogica is a skincare brand that a lot of people will be aware of and may have even tried their products. The brand was founded back in 1986 by a skincare therapist and offers a range of products designed to treat all different kinds of skin issues.

From dryness and dehydration to teenage acne and aging skin, they have products that are designed to improve them all. But what are the products really like? What is in them? And do they truly serve their purpose and resolve common skin complaints? We are going to explore all of these questions and look into some real customer reviews in this blog post, so read on to find out more.

What Products Do Dermalogica Produce?

Dermalogica’s products range from cleansers, moisturizers, serums, eye creams, barrier repair treatments, masks, toners, and more. The products are all tailored for different skin types and problems, and there is a huge array of them available to try. Their products are cruelty-free, free of animal testing and are committed to sustainability as well as being certified vegan.

In terms of ingredients, they are what is known as a ‘clean’ skincare brand, meaning their products are free of artificial colours and fragrances, parabens, alcohol and microplastics, among others. These are all ingredients that can often be linked to bad skin reactions and breakouts in people.

Dermalogica Best Selling Products

As we have just discussed, there are lots of dermalogica products and it can, understandably, be hard to know which ones are the best to try. Here are just a few of the best selling Dermalogica products:

1. Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel

This is one of the brand’s number one selling cleansers that is ideal for all skin types and conditions. It controls oil, hydrates and clears spots and breakouts leaving skin smooth and clean, as well as incorporating calming extracts of Lavender and Balm Mint to soothe the skin post-cleanse. It is gentle enough for everyday use, and doesn’t disrupt the skin’s natural moisture barrier either.

2. Skin smoothing cream moisturiser

Also great for all skin types, this product works by hydrating the skin and works on a molecular level to reduce Trans-Epidermal Water Loss. The advanced technology that does this also helps to shield the skin from any environmental stress, providing 48 hours of continuous hydration. All of these things contribute to a reduction in the signs of skin ageing and it is currently a trending product.

3. Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator

Another best selling product, the exfoliator is gentle enough that it can be used every day, but still works to achieve brighter and smoother skin. It includes a mixture of Papain, Salicylic Acid, Rice Enzymes, White Tea and Licorice that all work to brighten the skin and balance uneven skin tone too. It is a powder exfoliant that activates when it makes contact with water.

4. Age brightening clearing serum

This product is designed to clear and prevent breakouts whilst reducing the visible signs of ageing skin. With ingredients like salicylic acid that help to reduce breakouts and clear the skin, it also increases the cell turnover rate reducing signs of ageing. Niacinamide works with a White Shittake Mushroom ingredient to brighten the skin and promote a more even skin tone too.

Dermalogica: What Do People Really Think?

Dermalogica has certainly gained a lot of media and celebrity attention over the years, and if you search for people’s opinions of the skincare brand online you will mostly find coverage of awards and plenty of happy customers.

Dermalogica is also used by a number of celebrities, many of whom swear by their products. Celebs like Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, and Victoria Beckham are all users of the product, and many people understand why they love it so much.

One user of the brand says: “It literally saved my dry skin. I use the intensive moisturiser, the stabilising repair cream and alternate between the milkfoliant and microfoliant. I can’t understand why they’re not more popular. In love.”

Others also sing the praises of the product: “The daily microfoliant is a holy grail product for me. I’ve been using it for almost 20 years.”

Despite these positive reviews about the high quality and effectiveness of the products, it also seems a common theme for people to note the price of the products- compared with other skincare brands they are quite expensive, but that they are worth the price. You will also find a myriad of reviews that say this, or similar.

For instance, one user who loves the brand, says: “I LOVE everything Dermalogica other than their cleansers. The issue I have is the price point. Sometimes I can’t afford the products that I love from them…”

Others agree: “I love Dermalogica products. They are pricey, but worth it in my opinion. I’m currently using the moisturising cleanser and serum and it’s worked wonders…”

A different user agrees: “Expensive but excellent. The age bright clearing serum has cleared my hormonal/environmental adult acne. At $68 it’s not cheap, but it’s so worth it.”

Among the glowing reviews, and the reviews about the price point of the products, are also some negative ones, with people saying that despite paying a lot of money for so-presumed quality products, their skin reacted badly to them.

One user complained about the essential oils in the products, attributing this to their skin not tolerating it: “I couldn’t tolerate the products I tried because they contained a lot of essential oils, like the cleansing balm in a tube and the moisturisers.”

This is seconded by another user who felt that their skin reacted in the same way to the essential oils in the products: “They’re not bad per se…my skin hates the essential oils though. Mostly I just think their products are outdated and overpriced.”

Others have had similar experiences when using the products, another user says that their skin became red and irritated when they started using the pre-cleanse: “I used the pre-cleanse and my skin reacted horribly to it. My skin was red, irritated and had acne-like bumps all over.”

Why Do Some Have Bad Reactions to Dermalogica Products?

As we can see from the above reviews and experiences of Dermalogica products, a lot of people love them and say that they work wonders for their skin problems, whereas others find that they react badly. This is likely to come down to the fact that everyone’s skin reacts differently to different products, with different tolerance levels also playing a factor. But what are the ingredients in Dermalogica products that might be causing issues for some people?

A lot of Dermalogica’s products contain fragrance ingredients and essential oils that have been known to cause reactions on skin, especially for those who already suffer from sensitivity. Both natural and synthetic fragrances can cause this kind of contact allergy, and this is likely a reason why some people complain about not being able

to tolerate the levels of fragrance and oils in them. As with everything, everyone’s skin reacts differently to different products, some can tolerate higher levels of a certain extract, like fragrances and essential oils, where some cannot tolerate them at all. This doesn’t necessarily mean the products are ‘bad’ necessarily, just that certain people need to be mindful of what is included in the products. As far as skincare brands go, Dermalogica does not include a lot of harsh ingredients that others do- like parabens and alcohols.

Final Thoughts

Dermalogica is a very popular and well-loved skincare brand with a variety of products that are tailored for all different skin problems, types and ages. From SPF to moisturiser there is a product for everyone to include in their routine, and its commitment to producing products that are free of typically irritating ingredients like alcohols and parabens make it appealing to many.

Alongside its special skincare technology and use of evidence-based ingredients like peptides, acids and vitamin C, plus the brand’s commitment to being sustainable and cruelty-free, it definitely has a lot going for it. It is recommended by a lot of skincare professionals, and even founded by a skincare therapist who knows the ins and outs of skin treatment and ingredients.

For all the positive Dermalogica reviews, one negative of the brand has to be its price point- some of the products are incredibly expensive and a lot of people will find that they cannot afford to buy them regularly, if at all. Compared to other, more affordable, skincare brands, it may have more going for it, but if it isn’t feasible for a lot of people to buy, this has to be a downside of the brand and its products, no matter what the quality of them is.

Indeed, if anyone does experience reactions to the product, it appears to be to the essential oils and fragrances used in them, which is another downside of the product. Whilst not everyone has sensitivities to these, a lot of people do, or do not agree with the use of fragrance in skincare products.

The bottom line is this: everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently to products and ingredients. Dermalogica contains a lot of excellent ingredients and achieves a lot of positive results on different skin types and has done for a lot of years now.
